Soon I hear a cheerful melody floating in the fresh night air enticing us to the Mexican fair: It is a botellofono —a musical instrument formed by 200 bottles filled with water at different levels. The smell of tasty dishes awakens my appetite... in the candy stands I find sugar-coated peanuts, cotton candy, marquesitas (cheese- filled waffles) and other typical delights. The fair, taking me back to my childhood, also invites me to try my luck in its games. I buy a balloon and take a black-and-white souvenir photo beneath the colorful paper lamps. The impressive pyramidal construction of the Xcaret Mexico Museum, at Xcaret Mexico. , a striking pyramidal construction blanketed by vegetation. It houses scale models of the ancient Maya cities most representative of this grandiose civilization. Afterwards, I further along I discovered the Apiary composed of Melipona bee hives which I loved because of their delectable honey. I was enjoying every second! Some children were on an ecological tour planting orchid seedlings, they tasted the bees’ honey and mentioned that earlier they had collected butterfly eggs and had even fed a starfish in other areas of the park. Upon arriving at the entrance to the underground rivers, I couldn’t resist taking a dip in their refreshing and crystalline waters. The gentle current swept me along within the depths of the earth, intermittently illuminated by rays of natural light and I eventually drifted past the stage of the open-air theater where they played beautiful Mexican music. At the end of this experience I arrived at the lush mangrove forest by the sea, inhabited by a colony of pink flamingoes that made a striking contrast with the turquoise ocean. The beautiful beach with gentle waves was a delight. Lying back on an inner tube, I floated along basking in the sun while watching other people enjoying a short nap in a hammock in the shade of the palm trees. Marine life shines in all its splendor in Xcaret’s bodies of water. The inlet is refuge to thousands of multicolored fish and sea turtles, the lagoon houses a couple of manatees while dolphins live in the bay. Through various optional programs, they are able to interact with visitors. The Coral Reef Aquarium displays more than 5, 000 organisms in tanks fed. The Butterfly Pavilion, one of the most spectacular in the world, exhibits the great diversity and beauty of regional butterflies within a fantastic garden. I was able to sit there and meditate upon their metamorphosis, delighted by the ambient music that blended harmoniously with the space full of flowers. I was told that 20 species are reproduced, thanks to the 6, 000 square yard greenhouse among other reasons. I felt so fortunate to witness the way in which Xcaret respects each species and their natural habitat! The Maya Village and Rincon Mexicano revealed to me the cultural wealth of the Mexican people. At the edge of the river lies the Maya Village, a reproduction of a local village with traditional palm-thatched huts and inhabitants dressed in regional garb dedicated to the manufacture of crafts, so attractive that I couldn’t resist buying one of the beautiful handmade pieces. The Rincon Mexicano consists of an hacienda and stables, the point of departure for the horseback riding tour through the jungle, arriving at deserted white-sand beaches. At sunset, there is an entertaining display of traditional Mexican horsemanship in the ring.
